Dutch Star on the Chama River, Chama, New Mexico

One of our favorite places in the west is Chama, New Mexico. The people are friendly, the scenery great and the weather is cool and fresh. We parked with the Dutch Star about 15 feet from the Chama River. While there, we rode the narrow gauge train into Colorado and back.

Art in Santa Fe

In Sante Fe, Canyon Road is our favorite place. You can walk from one art gallery to another and experience much more there than possible in the museums. A great way to spend the day. Here are a few scenes from the galleries and Canyon Road.

Carme taking a break.

Caverns of Sonora, Texas

We were looking for a place to spend the night along I-10 about half way between Bing Bend National Park and San Antonio when we discovered the Caverns of Sonora and their little RV Park. They have pull thru sites BUT, big rigs like ours would block the roads if we remained hooked up. However, the location is quiet and restful and work unhooking for. There is electricity and water but no sewer hook ups. At $15 a night, it's well worth it. What a great little stopover.

I visited the caverns for $20. This was the price for a guided 2 hour walking tour. The tours average between 1.5 and 2 hours. There are steep steps to navigate down and up and it is humid there. The temperature in the caverns is not bad at all but the humidity makes up for it. So, it's well worth the visit, but have your knees in shape and prepare for some steps. The caverns are nothing less than spectacular !

Our little recently adopted terrier enjoyed watching the deer walk by the coach.

Gen-turi -- A good investment at $130 - Camping World

I just noticed that Camping World has the Gen-turi generator exhaust system on sale. I use mine whenever I'm running the generator where I think fumes might be a problem for us or others.  It attaches easily and does not take up a lot of space. I recommend it.

Love this Fulltime RV Lifestyle

Just wanted to pass along a few thoughts on this "fulltiming"  RV lifestyle. I recently went back to work for a few months, and am now "re-retired".  While I enjoyed the work, and am available for the right job, I just really enjoy retirement and this RV lifestyle.

Yesterday, I received travel and vacation materials on New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois. We plan on visiting those states in the months ahead and we wanted to see what was going on along the way. Already, I've identified a dozen "must sees" and can't wait to get the diesel fired up and pointed north.

There is just something very free and liberating about cranking up the coach and heading out to see what's on the other side of the hill. Unless I go back to work and can pass the astronaut test......this may be the closest I can get to "exploring".  For those readers who might be contemplating becoming "fulltimers", I can only say...it's really great.  I do not miss the stick and brick house, the house maintenance, lawn maintenance, property taxes, insurance, staring at the four walls, etc.

It's hard to describe the feeling of freedom achieved through fulltiming in a RV.  Guess you'll just have to try it yourself !

Llano Grande RV Resort ..... Jackrabbit

We're still at Llano Grande RV Resort near Mercedes, Texas. We're enjoying the park, the people, the pool, and especially the birds and wildlife that pass through.  Our puppy would like to get after the jackrabbits..but we try to restrain her. They are something to watch !

Iwo Jima Memorial and Museum, Harlingen, Texas

While in the Rio Grande Valley, a must see for military historians is the Iwo Jima Memorial and Museum. The museum is small but packed with interesting artifacts and stories from Iwo Jima. On certain days, you can converse with USMC veterans of the battle of Iwo Jima who volunteer at the museum. I had an opportunity to speak for a couple of hours with a Marine veteran of Iwo Jima. He was a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) man in a Marine infantry unit charged with taking the island. It was a real honor meeting him. As with most combat veterans, he was friendly and would talk a little about the battle, but there is no bragging and you can tell that the combat memories are not necessarily good memories. What a great generation these World War II veterans are. We would be in a totally different America without them and their sacrifices.

Marine Military Academy, Harlingen, Texas

We had an opportunity to observe an awards ceremony at the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas last week. The Marine Military Academy is a private college preparatory school for grades 8-12. The awards ceremony included a parade and several awards presented to the students by various USMC retired officers and senior enlisted staff. It was very well done and upheld the best traditions of my United States Marine Corps.
